Falmouth/Yarmouth Breaks the Silence of Domestic Abuse

Falmouth Memorial Library and Merrill Memorial Library (Yarmouth) are co-sponsoring a Finding Our Voices survivor-led public forum on domestic abuse at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 26th at the Falmouth Memorial Library (5 Lunt Road).

This event caps the statewide 2024 “Let’s Talk About It” Tour  by the grassroots nonprofit Finding Our Voices, that brought the group from Eastport to Biddeford, including to two community colleges, a high school, three remote islands, and the Botanical Gardens in Boothbay.

On October 26, six survivors of domestic abuse including 84 year old retired second grade teacher Mary Lou Smith from Scarborough,  a hotel manager and hairdresser from the Midcoast Hotel, and the author Deb Gould from Brunswick, will share their journeys in and out of domestic abuse and lead a community conversation on the complicated subject. The discussion will include what to do if you suspect someone you care about is in a dangerous relationship. The public forum will be preceded by two short films and will be followed by a reception with refreshments and the chance for more intimate one-on-one conversations.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged for planning purposes.

Finding Our Voices marshals survivor Voices to break the silence of domestic abuse one community and conversation at at time across Maine. Its sister support programs include a Get Out Stay Out Fund that has distributed a quarter of a million dollars in three years, access to free dental care, and online support groups.
