Join us for the annual meeting of the Falmouth Historical Society. This meeting will begin with a short business meeting (1-1:30pm), followed by a presentation commemorating the destruction of our town center by the British on October 17th, 1775. This will be one of the highlights of our celebration of our nation’s semiquincentennial. The District of Maine was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. While the “shot heard round the world” rang out in Lexington, Concord, and Arlington, a faceoff between Patriot and the Crown was taking place in Falmouth’s town center (now Portland’s Old Port). This culminated six months later when a flotilla commanded by Lt. Mowatt of the Royal Navy set the Old Port ablaze with cannon fire before sending troops ashore to finish the job. We’ll tell that story.
Co-sponsored by the Library and the Falmouth Historical Society.
