Join us for a book talk with author Lisa Wentzell as part of the Falmouth PTO's Disability and Neurodiversity Celebration Week! Light refreshments will be served.
Lisa Wentzell, co-author of A Dog & His Boy; The Adventures of Spillway & Scotty, along with her son, Scotty, will be doing a book reading, presentation, and discussion about their recently published book and their family’s journey of living with a disability. Scotty was born with a chromosomal disorder that causes developmental delays. The book describes how Scotty forms a unique and special friendship with his stuffed dog, Spillway. Together, this duo takes you on a journey through Scotty’s life where they experience acceptance, empathy, and inclusion during their unique time together. This wonderful presentation will include a slideshow of videos and pictures depicting Scotty’s real life adventures and connections with local organizations such as Special Surfers, Maine Adaptive, and Best Buddies. The hope is that students will learn that even though Scotty has differing abilities, it doesn’t define or limit him, and with all of these opportunities he is living his life to the fullest. Scotty has a unique friendship with Spillway that reminds us that we all want a sense of belonging. We hope students can recognize that we all want and need friends and we all want to be included at school, work, play, and in our communities. This presentation will highlight the importance of celebrating our differences and that with a little determination, creativity, and support of friends, anything is possible.
