Program Description

Event Details

Join us for a presentation commemorating the destruction of our town center by the British on October 17th, 1775.  This will be one of the highlights of our celebration of our nation’s semiquincentennial.  The District of Maine was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.  While the “shot heard round the world” rang out in Lexington, Concord, and Arlington, a faceoff between Patriot and the Crown was taking place in Falmouth’s town center (now Portland’s Old Port).  This culminated six months later when a flotilla commanded by Lt. Mowatt of the Royal Navy set the Old Port ablaze with cannon fire before sending troops ashore to finish the job.  We’ll tell that story.

The public is invited to stay after the presentation for the Falmouth Historical Society's Business Meeting which will run from 3:30-4 PM.

Registration is not required. You may register if you wish to receive an email reminder. Space is limited to 58 people.

Please note that this is a hybrid event. This program will be recorded and broadcast via Zoom. For more information about attending online, please contact the Falmouth Historical Society by phone at (207) 781-4727, or by email at info@thefhs.org
