DESCRIPTION: Black Mainers: A History of Resistance and Resilience — In
Celebration of JuneteenthAfrican Americans live in Maine and have lived i
n Maine for at least as long as people of European descent (and most of us
are ignorant of this history because we do not learn about it). Black Mai
ners and others were resilient and resisted oppression.  African American
s (and others) in Maine have actively resisted racism and inequity in thei
r lives and throughout Maine’s history. This program focuses on individu
als and their stories. While the program touches upon the enslavement of Af
rican Americans, it concentrates on how enslavement existed here in Maine.
This program shows the strength and humanity of those who resisted slaver
y, racism, and othering. The primary ideas that we hope attendees will tak
e away from this program center around Black Mainers persistence, resilien
ce, and resistance to oppression. Registration is not required. Register
to receive an email reminder. Drop ins welcome!About the Presenter
